A chance to say ‘‘thank you’’ to attorneys involved in pro-bono work in Tulsa is set for Oct. 29 at the Tulsa County Bar Association.The event, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. is part of a national celebration of pro bono work, said Chad McLain, committee chair. Reservations requested and can be made by contacting Sandra Cousins, TCBA executive director, at 584-5243 ext 222, or email at sandrac@tulsabar.com. The thank you event also is designed to introduce attorneys to pro bono work and encourage them to volunteer some time to help those who cannot pay for legal services, McLain said. It is part of a week-long celebration by the American Bar Association at the national level. A number of agencies utilizing pro bono attorney services will attend and show how this legal assistance helps them serve others, he said. A good representation of attorneys is expected as are a number of law students who will be invited. Court of Civil Appeals Judge Jane Wiseman is serving as honorary chair of the event and Allen Smallwood, Oklahoma Bar Association president-elect will speak. Both are long-practicing attorneys and have served as pro bono lawyers. ‘‘I think pro bono service for attorneys is an extremely important part of being a lawyer,’’ McLain said. ‘‘It gives everyone in Tulsa County an opportunity to se who we are and the help we provide.’’ However, he cautioned, pro bono service is taking a client when an attorney knows these individuals can’t pay for services. It does not apply when a client fails to pay their bill.
